Bowling shoes: what makes them special?
Share
A lot of people wonder if they can play in their regular street shoes. The answer is a clear NO. Bowling requires a special sole, both to protect the lane and to help the player:

- Sliding sole: Usually made of felt or microfiber, it allows your sliding foot (left foot for right-handed players) to glide smoothly during the approach and release.
- Braking heel: The heel is made of rubber to help you stop safely after releasing the ball and avoid slipping forward.
More experienced players, or those who play more frequently, often use shoes with interchangeable soles on their sliding foot:

As you progress to a higher level, interchangeable soles come into play. If the lane is very dry or very oily, you can change the sole to slide more or less. It’s the favorite investment of players who look for consistency in their game.
